The new, new life in France -- yep, diapers on the line

Having a baby in France is turning out to be quite a different experience for me -- far from the motorcycle-riding, restaurant-hopping experience I started out with here in Nice. So far, we've tackled French restaurants, French hikes, strolling alongside the ocean with our poussette (stroller) and public diaper changes. Doing all of this in a language and culture that's not my own has been challenging, but becoming a new mom seems to be a learning experience no matter where a maman lives.

I've got a few friends who are blogging about their mommy adventures and I've listed their blogs below in a new mommy blog roll. Since a lot of this learning has to do with figuring out what's needed for a baby, what you'd like to live with and what you actually can live with, I thought I'd add in a little information of my own. Then I'll get back to France and writing in general.

Here are some of the purchases we've gone with: cloth diapers (we chose Charlie Banana because we can get them here, but there are lots of other good ones), a not-so-expensive, but light-weight travel system stroller (Nurse, made in Spain), a few different slings for carrying the baby (Storchenwiege, Blue Celery are the ones we like the best), a mat for tummy time on the floor (Sophie la Girafe), and some toys (so far: Nattou and Lamaze). I also knit a bunch of sweaters and an amazing nid d'ange that we keep in the car seat (Phildar). We also borrowed this very, very useful Sleep Sheep from my sister.

Anyone else have any safe-your-life purchases to suggest?

  1. I love "Petit Bateau", great cotton clothes. Started for kids and now it's trendy for everyone.

  2. I love some of those clothes, too! I didn't know they were for everyone, though. Adults wear them?
