Am I French Enough -- The Exam Date!!

I know I said I was taking a break from blogging last week and this week, but this news is just too daunting to ignore. I've been given a date for my French test -- the one that's not just in French, but will test my knowledge of French culture or French civic duties or some French facts I have yet to look up. (Looked quickly just now: des valeurs de la République françaises)

This is the test for my carte de séjour that I'd guessed might evaluate my wine consumption, test my ability to ride around on a bicycle with an increasing number of baguettes being tossed into my basket, or have me singing La Marseillaise (listen).

The exam will take place very, very shortly before the French wedding party.

That's the scary part.

I don't think I'll get expelled from the country if I don't pass, but a failing grade would definitely make me a little less confident about meeting the French side of the family.

That said, research begins this week. Test in two weeks.

I'll see if I can find enough info to post a practice test. Then, anyone else who is interested can give it a try, too -- or, give me pointers!

  1. I've done a bit of reading on the topic just to prepare myself. From what I gather it doesn't appear to be that big a deal...but maybe that's "them" pulling the wool over my eyes. Good luck and let us know what you find out/how it all goes.

  2. I'm hoping they'll just ask me if I'm aware that women are allowed to work and vote, give me kisses on both cheeks, and then stamp whatever it is that they need to stamp. But I'll still do some research anyway. Will let you know if I find anything interesting ... or challenging!

  3. Oh wow, a French test! I'd be interested in looking at a practice one. Maybe all they do is to give you a couple glasses of vin and test your knowledge on that! Wouldn't that be cool?!

    Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be fine!

  4. Oh do post the practice test if you can! I'll boost your confidence by... probably failing. Seriously. I don't even drink wine.

I was a bit stressed when I had to take my citizenship test in Canada and I actually studied the book even though everyone said the exam was pretty basic.

  5. The book???! Shoot. I wonder if there's one here.

I'll definitely let you know what I think will be on the test (or interview, or whatever it is). Maybe you can be my tutor? (The wine part is something I think I can handle on my own :)
