Rooting for the underdog

We went to see a movie at the theatre last night, which is an experience that always surprises me -- partly because I don't normally go to the movies in Canada, and partly because I always forget that many of the movies in France are shown in French.

This one was the weirdest so far because the movie was Robin des Bois (Robin Hood), which is about the French and the English trying to kill each other. And throughout the entire film, I held hands with a Frenchman.

It was honestly such a relief.

Since I arrived in France, the differences between the French and the English (or at least between the French from France and English Canada) have been a strong part of this this experience. The Professor and I have gone through excitement and romance and fear and difficulty, but have also just spent a lot of time sorting out how our two cultures can live together.

Last night at the movie, I got to sit in a room full of French people who were willing to root for the underdog, no matter which of our cultures he came from. I liked that. They rooted for an Englishman and I watched the movie in French.

Compromise.
