Cross-border shopping in Italy

Menton, France, on the drive to Italy to do some grocery shopping this afternoon.

Tried to photograph some of the big citrus floats from Menton's Fête du Citron, but most were hidden behind a big wall and we could only catch a glimpse of their tops. We did, however, find a stage that was covered in oranges and lemons.

The tunnels to Italy ... one of my first introductions to driving standard a few months ago. Now I only drive the scooter (will resume car lessons when I know where I'm going, which will still take some time).

Stopped in a cute little waterfront area in Italy where we had to walk across a long bridge (over water) to get to the restaurants, which you can see in the distance. Where we eventually ate is the last little group of lights on the water on the right. Inside the restaurant, everyone ate pizza (except us, we had pasta) while a man walked around singing in Italian and playing guitar.

  1. How nice to be able to cross-border shopping like that - to Italy!? And how romantic!

So you're really only driving the scooter?!

  2. The Prof asked if I wanted to drive to Italy, but I said, "NOOO!"

I'm working on managing my "learning." I think it's good emotionally to concentrate on a few things and "focus and follow through" (that's my mom talking) rather than trying to take on too much. At least here in France. That's how I freaked myself out when I first got here.

For now, the scooter wins since it's so much easier to park. Really... here that can sometimes mean the difference of an hour.

  3. I loved that about Italy. Every night when we ate dinner on a patio, at least 3 musicians would come by and sing for the dinner crowd. Funny story:
This one man and woman duo came onto the patio in Rome, he played guitar, and she sang. She had this huge mole on her face, like right out of "Uncle Buck". Lisa and I couldn't recall if they were any good, even an hour later, all we could remember was the mole. It was like Gold Member....MOLE, moly, moly, moly.

  4. Do you see a lot of smart cars in Nice? No reasons to overwhelm yourself at all!

  5. Ron!!!! Be nice.

Carmen: we were talking about Smart cars the other day. They can actually park sideways here (since here you're allowed to ignore some of the parking rules, it seems). Much more practical here than driving through Ottawa's winters -- although we had them there, too.

  6. Maybe they don't give out that many traffic tickets then!!! Scooter through the snow - that would be fun!
